“A few weeks ago, I was contacted by a journalist who wanted to dive into the topic of church branding. To be honest, I didn’t know much about it at first, but after reflecting on the topic, I realized it had a lot more to do with symbols, history, and the deep emotional connection people have with religion. This sparked our curiosity in the studio, and we decided to explore it further.

This exploration led to the creation of our first-ever thematic newsletter, where we delve into the fascinating intersection between religion and branding. From the Vatican’s global brand identity to the professionalization of its communication strategies, there’s so much to learn here that goes beyond mere visual design.

Here are a few key insights that stood out to us:

1. The Vatican as a Global Brand: An ancient institution, yet it operates like a modern global brand. Its symbols, rituals, and even the papal election (which itself is a marketing operation) are all carefully curated to shape a consistent and recognizable identity.

2. Professionalizing Vatican Communication: In 2017, the Vatican entrusted its communication strategy to Accenture, centralizing media channels and applying modern storytelling techniques. This shows the Vatican’s commitment to staying relevant in the digital age while maintaining its spiritual mission.

3. The Pope as a Brand Persona: Pope Francis’ carefully crafted public image, including his humble gestures, has made him a powerful ambassador for the Vatican. His actions, like using public transport or washing the feet of prisoners, communicate core brand values of humility and inclusion.

4. What Brands Can Learn from Religious Branding: Religions have mastered the art of building strong communities with shared beliefs. Brands like Apple, Nike, and Patagonia have adopted similar strategies to create a sense of belonging among their audiences.

5. Belief as the Core of Connection: As Zachary Carpenter suggests, both religion and branding thrive on systems of belief. Brands need to ask themselves: What do we want people to believe when they think of us?

This topic is especially timely, with the recent papal election sparking discussions around the future of the Church and its brand. It’s a reminder that successful brands, much like religions, need to inspire, guide, and transcend beyond the product or service they offer.

We invite you to read our newsletter to explore these themes in more depth. It’s not just about logos and colors—it’s about creating a lasting connection with people through shared beliefs.”
